چکیده

The consumption or scavenging of ¢sh in the water column at depths from 75 to 275m in Algarve (southern Portugal) trawl ¢shing grounds was evaluated. Longlines were used to suspend baits throughout the water column while electric ¢shing reels were used to simulate sinking discards. Eighteen species were caught, with higher catch rates near the surface than near the bottom. However, scavenging rates were generally highest near the bottom and lowest in the middle of the water column. At depths less than 100m the majority or all the ¢sh were scavenged throughout the water column, while at depths greater than 200m most of the ¢sh were untouched after periods of time greater than would be required for them to sink to the bottom. Since other studies have shown that most small ¢sh discards are scavenged at the surface by sea birds and most of the discarded species that sink are either too large or not attractive to pelagic predators, these results suggest that mid-water scavenging of trawl discards in deep water is relatively unimportant.

The Fish and Fisheries of Bouvet Island

Total marine fisheries catches by CCAMLR member countries within the EEZ of Bouvet Island (or Bouvetøya, Norway) in the southern Atlantic were estimated from 1970 to 2010, including previously unreported catches from longline fisheries. Mesopelagic and demersal fish species distribution and abundance around Bouvet Island were assessed through the 20 century by various methods. Cumulative marine...

Good news, bad news: global fisheries discards are declining, but so are total catches

During fishing operations, fish are often caught that were not targeted. When the species in question are of low value, or protected, this ‘by-catch’ is often thrown overboard as ‘discards’, the retained part of the catch constituting the landings. The amounts of fish discarded are generally highly areaand gear-specific, but can be high; for example, discards in tropical shrimp trawl fisheries ...

Fishery Discards: Factors Affecting Their Variability within a Demersal Trawl Fishery

Discards represent one of the most important issues within current commercial fishing. It occurs for a range of reasons and is influenced by an even more complex array of factors. We address this issue by examining the data collected within the Danish discard observer program and describe the factors that influence discarding within the Danish Kattegat demersal fleet over the period 1997 to 200...

The impact of trawl fishery on the epifauna of the southern North Sea

Qualitative historical benthos data (1902–1912) were compared with recent data (1986) to find long-term trends in epifauna species composition in the southern North Sea that may be attributed to fishery-induced changes. In general, the frequency of occurrence of bivalve species declined, whereas scavenger and predator species (crustaceans, gastropods, and sea stars) were observed more frequentl...

Bio-economic evaluation of implementing trawl fishing gear with different selectivity.

The paper develops a biological-economic evaluation tool to analyse the consequences for trawl fishers of implementing more selective fishing technologies. This is done by merging a dynamic biological population model and an economic cost-benefit evaluation framework to describe the consequences for the fish stocks, fishermen and society. The bio-economic evaluation is applied to the case of th...
